What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment, software, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Different disabilities require different assistive technologies.
Assistive technology includes products, and services, to help people who have difficulty speaking, typing, writing, remembering, pointing, seeing, hearing, learning, walking, etc.
There are some resources that I found that can be useful to me in assistive technology. The National Center for learning Disabilities gives 13 free resources that parents as well as educators can use. There is information on what can be done for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. These tools can help students get a better understanding on the information that they are trying to process.
Watching the video Understanding Assistive Technology gives you the simple information on how (AT) is used. I know as a future educator, I will have students that may have disabilities that require me to adjust my teaching techniques to help them better understand the material that I will be presenting. It is my job to communicate with the school staff as well as parents to ensure that this is done properly. There are lots of (AT) devices that can help with this process, it just takes one small step to make a HUGE difference.
